Salesforce's search back-end is built on similar technology to Google. This means that it has many of the same advanced search capabilities. In this article, we'll explore how you can use these capabilities and conventions.

Default Search Logic

When you search using keywords, it implicitly searches all records with a wildcard around each word.

"Steve Hyland" is translated to "*Steve* OR *Hyland*" and will match any record that contains "Steven" OR "Hylander"

Search Quotes

When you wrap your search in quotes, you are specifying that the search results must match any text wrapped in quotes. So, "Steve" "Hyland" would require an exact match of the strings "Steve" AND " Hyland" to be present in the record to match.

AND/OR Operators

Let's say you want to do some competitive research on two competitors: Acme and Nestle. You can use the following search syntax:

Acme OR Nestle => results in any record that contains Acme OR Nestle

Acme AND NESTLE => results in any record that specifically contains both records.
